How I Stay Organized.. and Sane

We all have a lot going on in our everyday lives. I get it because I always feel like my mind and time are split between a million different things. I work a full time job as a teacher, a full time lifestyle blogger and a full time mom obviously. It gets a little hard to keep everything in check and make sure that I do not forget a blogger event, or a toddler’s birthday party or even to schedule a date night.

So here is how I keep my sanity afloat. I plan EVERYTHING. My planner looks like someone’s mind just wrote it self down all over the pages. But hey, thats what helps me remember what I need to get done or where I need to be. So here is what I use:

Erin Condren Planner

This is the first year I have used this planner and let me tell you, it is going to be the only one I will ever need to use. Not only does this planner have a fabulous assortment of covers to choose from, you can also personalize it with your name, initials or even a picture of the family. I chose the Hexagon pattern. It is adorable, there are so many colors and little details that I just love about it. I also opted for adding my initials on the cover and switching the binding to be Rose Gold. That little change makes a world of difference.

So now about the inside and why I love it. So I love the fact that I could change it to be a horizontal layout for the week. I had recently been using a planner that had the hourly breakdown and I caught myself thinking, why do I need this, I am always at the same place from 7-4. I also opted for the neutral layout. I use a lot of stickers to plan out special days like paydays, birthdays and appointments. I also maybe throw in a sticker for a girls night every once in a while.

The Accessories

Now, I use an array of different items to keep myself organized when I am planning out the week and even the month. I use the Recollection planner stickers in different styles. I like to be able to chose the color I want based on the event or item that needs to be completed. I know what your thinking, OCD much? But not really, I just prefer a “creative” mess.

I use magnetic page markers like these from Amazon to mark my week. It makes it an easier flip than turning pages to find the right day. I also use these paper clips to add in appointment cards or invitations. Post its are also my best friend. I keep a post it pad in my clear case with my stickers in case of emergencies and I do not have time to write something in a specific date just yet. I also use the post its for things that aren’t just yet concrete.

Now the pens. I am very picky about the pens that I use and my students can attest to that. I even had a student gift me a big pack of these pens for the holidays. I use the Paper Mate Ink Joy Gel 0.7 pens. I love them. There is just something about the way that they write that just makes my handwriting look amazing. Also, they are a faster drying gel pen so I can write something and close up my planner without worrying that it spread to another page.

My Organizational Madness

I use to just write everything in black and then play this game with myself about who or what it was for. Now, everything has a color and I can easily remember what everything is for. Here is how I break it down:

  • Purple – Sydney (My Daughter)
  • Pink – Me (Personal items and appointments)
  • Blue – My Boyfriend (Not really much here but I always have a color just in case)
  • Teal – Blog (Upcoming posts, to-do lists, sponsor posts, etc.)
  • Green – Family (These are events, parties or vacations we are all a part of)
  • Orange – Payday
  • Red – Bills

Now once something has been completed, I highlight it with a purple highlighter. If something has to be moved, I mark it in black so it is easy to see against the colors.

I typically like to take time on a Saturday or Sunday night to see what the next week has coming up. This way I can give it my full attention and make sure that I do not forget anything or I do not use the wrong color code. If I have to write something quick, I usually just write it down on a post it note and place it by the day. This way, when I get home, I can write it down at my own pace. A messy planner is not a productive one.
